Gordon was born in Ontario, to English parents. The Rev. Archibald was born in Bromyard, Herefordshire, the son of James Alfred Philpotts/Philpott and Alice Evans. Katherine was born in Upton upon Severn, Worcestershire, the daughter of William Henry Lane and Eliza Burell.
