Emilio Aguinaldo was a Filipino revolutionary and politician. He served as Philippine revolutionary leader/President of the First Philippine Republic, from January 23, 1899 to April 19, 1901; making him the first President of the Philippines . He was also President of the Tejeros Revolutionary Government, from March 22, 1897 to November 1, 1897, President of the Republic of Biak-na-Bato, from November 2, 1897 to December 14, 1897, Dictator of the Philippines, from May 24, 1898 to June 23, 1898, President of the Revolutionary Government of the Philippines, from June 23, 1898 to January 23, 1899, Commanding General of the Philippine Revolutionary Army, from June 5, 1899 to April 19, 1901, and Member of the Council of State of the Republic of the Philippines, from June 19, 1943 to August 17, 1945.

He was the son of Carlos Aguinaldo y de los Santos, or Carlos de los Santos Aguinaldo in Filipino, later changed his maternal family name to Jamir; and Trinidad Fami Valerio y Villanueva, or Trinidad Villanueva Fami Valerio in Filipino, later changed her paternal family name to Famy. He was married to María Agoncillo y Reyes, or María Reyes Agoncillo in Filipino; of Taal, Batangas, until her death. He was previously married to Hilaria del Rosario y Reyes or Hilaria Reyes del Rosario in Filipino, of Imus, Cavite, until her death. Emilio and Hilaria had five children.

Some sources reported his date of birth as March 22, 1869, but his baptismal record states that he was three days old when he was baptized on March 29, 1869, making March 26, 1869 as his date of birth. Also, he was listed as a “mestizo de sangley” on church records.

Emilio’s paternal grandfather was named Eugenio Aguinaldo. Eugenio was Ilocano.

Emilio’s paternal grandmother was named María de los Santos (later Jamir). María changed her family name due to a decree issued by Governor-General of the Philippines Narciso Clavería concerning the family names of the Filipino natives.

Emilio’s maternal grandfather was named Joaquín Fami Valerio.

Emilio’s maternal grandmother was named Simona Villanueva.
