Emmylou Harris is an American country singer, songwriter, musician, bandleader, and activist.
Emmylou is the daughter of Eugenia and Walter Rutland Harris, a Marine Corps officer. She was partly raised in Cherry Point, North Carolina, and then Quantico and Woodbridge, in Virginia. She has deep American roots from most recent family lines. Emmylou has a daughter with her former husband, folk artist Tom Slocum; and a daughter with her former husband, Canadian record producer and guitarist Brian Ahern.
Emmylou’s paternal grandfather was Armand DeRosset Harris (the son of James Watkins Harris, Jr. and Annie DeRosset). Armand was born in Cartersville, Georgia. James was the son of James Watkins Harris and Ann Eliza Hamilton. Annie was the daughter of Armand Lamar DeRosset and Tallulah Ellen Low.
Emmylou’s paternal grandmother was Hallie Nutt Rutland (the daughter of Walter Rutland and Louise Nutt Parsley). Hallie was born in Tarboro, North Carolina. Walter was the son of William Henry Rutland and Mary Anna Swain. Louise was the daughter of Oscar Grant Parsley and Amanda McKay Nutt.
Emmylou’s maternal grandfather was Dewey Evins Murchison (the son of Kenneth Murchison and Geneva Eugenia Watt). Dewey was born in Rockford, Alabama. Kenneth was the son of Pvt. Roary McIver Murchison and Nancy M. Gill. Geneva was the daughter of Thomas Marshall Watt and Parthenia Jane Berry.
