Joseph was born in Minnesota, the son of Joseph David Sicard de Carufel, whose parents were French-Canadian; and of Marie Hamel, whose parents were also French-Canadian. Rosanna was born in Minnesota, the daughter of French-Canadian parents, Jean Prudent Bérubé and Philomene Marie DeMers.
