Everett Dirksen was an American politician. A Republican, he served as a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Illinois, from March 4, 1933 to January 3, 1949, a U.S. Senator from Illinois, from January 3, 1951 to September 7, 1969, his death, the Senate Minority Whip, from January 3, 1957 to January 3, 1959, and Senate Minority Leader, from January 3, 1959 to September 7, 1969.

He was a candidate for the Republican Party’s nomination for President of the United States in 1944 .

Everett was born in Pekin, Illinois, the son of German parents, Antje (Conradi/Conrady) and Johann Friedrich/Friedrichs Dirksen. His mother was born in Aurich.

He was married to Louella Carver. Their daughter Joy was married to U.S. Senator and Senate Minority, and Majority, Leader Howard Baker .
