Franchot Tone was an American actor, producer, and director. He was a major film star of the 1930s and 1940s. His roles include the films Mutiny on the Bounty (1935), Between Two Women , The Girl Downstairs , Fast and Furious (1939), Phantom Lady , and The Man on the Eiffel Tower , and television’s The Twilight Zone and The Alfred Hitchcock Hour . He co-directed the film Uncle Vanya (1957).
He was the son of Gertrude Van Vranken (Franchot), a socialite, and Dr. Frank Jerome Tone, who was president of the Carborundum Company. His family was upper-class. He had two children with his former wife, actress and model Jean Wallace .
Franchot’s paternal grandfather was Thomas Jefferson Tone (the son of John Tone and Electa/Electra Hubbard). Thomas was born in Bergen, Genesee, New York. John was born in Scipio, Cayuga, the son of John Andrew Tone, whose paternal grandparents were from Dublin, Ireland, and Suffolk, England, respectively; and of Margaret Manahan, whose father was Irish. Franchot’s great-grandmother Electra was born in Oneida, New York, the daughter of Ithiel Hubbard and Mary Gains.
Franchot’s paternal grandmother was Catherine Delia “Kate” Spafford/Stafford (the daughter of Sumner Spafford and Delia Barber). Catherine was born in New York. Sumner was born in Buckland, Franklin, Massachusetts, the son of Jacob Spofford and Abigail Deane. Delia was born in Connecticut, the daughter of James Barber and Lovina Humphreys.
