His father was a brigadier. His parents were from San Severo, Apulia. Franco is married to English actress Vanessa Redgrave , with whom he has a son, screenwriter and filmmaker Carlo Gabriel Nero.
Franco has said that his grandmother was a “gitana” (Romani).
