Fyodor Dostoyevsky was a Russian novelist, short story writer, essayist, journalist, and philosopher. He wrote the novels Crime and Punishment , The Idiot , Demons , The Adolescent , and The Brothers Karamazov , the novella Notes from Underground , and the non-fiction collection A Writer’s Diary .
Fyodor was the son of Maria Fyodorovna (Nechayeva) and Mikhail Andreevich Dostoyevsky, a doctor. His father was born in Voytovtsy, Belarus. His mother was born in Moscow. He was raised on the family home, located on the estate of the Mariinsky Hospital for the Poor, where his father worked. Fyodor was married to Maria Dmitriyevna Isaeva, until her death; and then to memoirist, stenographer, and assistant Anna Dostoevskaya (born Anna Grigoryevna Snitkina), until his death. He had four children, including writer and memoirist Lyubov Dostoevskaya, with Anna.
The noble Dostoyevsky family was said to trace back to Aslan Chelebi-Murza, a Tatar warlord, who left the Mongolian Golden Horde, and joined the Russian side, in 1389.
Fyodor’s paternal grandfather was named Andrey/Andrei Grigoreevich/Grigorievich Dostoevsky/Dostoyevsky (the son of Grigoriy/Grigory Yozefovich/Iosifovich Dostoyevsky/Dostoevsky). Grigoriy was the son of Iosif/Josef Karlovich Dostoyevsky/Dostoevsky.
Fyodor’s paternal grandmother was named Anastasya/Anastasia.
Fyodor’s maternal grandfather was named Fyodor/Fedor Timofeeyevich/Timofeevich Nechayev/Nechaev (the son of Timofey Ivanovich Nechayev/Nechaev and Agafya Filippovna). Fyodor was born in Borovsk, Borovsky District, Kaluga Oblast. Timofey was the son of Ivan Vasilievich/Vasilyevich Nechayev/Nechaev.
Fyodor’s maternal grandmother was named Varvara Mikhailovna Kotelnicka/Kotelnitskaya (the daughter of Mikhail Fyodorovich/Fedorovich Kotelnicky/Kotelnitsky, and of a mother whose patronymic was Petrovna). Mikhail was the son of Fedor Andreevich Kotelnicky. Varvara’s maternal grandfather was named Petr Andreevich.
