Gary Peters is an American politician, lawyer, and naval officer. A member of the Democratic Party, he has been a U.S. Senator from Michigan, since January 3, 2015. He has also been Commissioner of the Michigan Lottery, from April 9, 2003 to August 7, 2007, a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Michigan, from January 3, 2009 to January 3, 2015, Chair of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, from January 28, 2021 to January 3, 2025, and Chair of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, from February 3, 2021 to January 3, 2025.
He is the son of Madeleine Aimee (Vignier), a nurse’s aide, and Herbert Garrett Peters, a public school teacher, historian, and statistician. His father was American. His mother was a French war bride, from Rheims. He was raised in Oakland County. Gary is married to Colleen Ochoa, with whom he has three children. He is an Episcopalian.
Gary’s paternal grandfather was Louis Julian Peters (the son of Julian Sidney Peters and Mary McCornac). Louis was born in Michigan. Gary’s great-grandfather Julian was born in Oakland, Michigan, the son of Plineas V. Peters and Eleanor L. Kentner, whose paternal grandparents were German. Mary was born in New Jersey, the daughter of James McCornac and Rachel Smith.
Gary’s paternal grandmother was Florence Rosalie Garrett (the daughter of Robert Clarance Garrett and Maria Louisa Boulware). Robert was born in Virginia, the son of Richard Henry Garrett and Fannie Brumbley Holloway. Maria was born in Caroline County, Virginia, the daughter of Mark Lee Boulware and Rosina Trice.
