Gavin Newsom is an American politician and businessperson. A member of the Democratic Party, he has been Governor of California, since January 7, 2019. He was previously a Member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, from February 13, 1997 to January 8, 2004, Mayor of San Francisco, California, from January 8, 2004 to January 10, 2011, and Lieutenant Governor of California, from January 10, 2011 to January 7, 2019. He has also co-founded boutique PlumpJack Group, which includes wineries, restaurants, and hotels, and has hosted The Gavin Newsom Show .
Gavin is the son of Tessa Thomas (Menzies) and William Alfred Newsom III, who was a state appeals court judge and administrator of the Getty family trust. His maternal great-grandfather, Thomas Addis, was a physician and scientist, who made important contributions to studying blood clots. Gavin’s father was of at least seven eighths Irish descent, with the rest being mostly English. Gavin’s mother had English, Scottish, and distant French Huguenot, ancestry. Both of Gavin’s maternal great-grandfathers had been born in Edinburgh, Scotland.
Gavin is married to documentary filmmaker and actress Jennifer Siebel Newsom, with whom he has four children.
He is a second cousin, once removed, of harpist, keyboardist, vocalist, songwriter, and actress Joanna Newsom .
Gavin’s patrilineal line can be traced to William Newsom, who was born, c. 1614, likely in England. He moved to Virginia in 1635, aboard the George.
Gavin’s paternal grandfather was William Alfred Newsom (the son of William Alfred Newsom and Belinda D. Collins). Gavin’s grandfather William was born in San Francisco, San Francisco Co., California. Gavin’s great-grandfather William was the son of Alfred Cane Newsom, whose paternal grandfather fought in the Revolutionary War; and of Elizabeth S. Gavin’s paternal grandmother was Christine Anne Brennan (the daughter of John Brennan and Anna Burke). Christine was born in California, to Irish parents. Anna was the daughter of John Burke and Nancy Marron.
Gavin’s maternal grandfather was Arthur Liddell Menzies (the son of Kenneth Menzies and Maude Victoria Waithman). Arthur was born in Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., California. Kenneth was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, the son of Thomas Menzies, who was Scottish, and of Agnes Emily Hewitt, who was English. Maude was born in Pinos Altos, Chihuahua, Mexico, the daughter of Hubert Waithman de Lindeth Waithman, who was English, from Manchester, Lancashire; and of Grace Gertrude Winton, who was born in Sonora, Tuolumne, California, to parents from New York.
Gavin’s maternal grandmother was Jean Thorburn Addis (the daughter of Thomas Addis and Elesa Bolton Partridge). Jean was born in San Francisco, San Francisco Co., California, and had acted as Trigger Addis, appearing in San Francisco Actor’s Workshop. Gavin’s great-grandfather Thomas was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, the son of Thomas Chalmers Addis, who was of half English and half Scottish descent, and of Cornelia Beers Campbell, who was born in New Orleans, Louisiana.
