Gene was the son of Anna A. and Harold Frederick Pitney. He was partly raised in Rockville, Connecticut. He was married to Lynne Gayton, with whom he had three children.

Gene’s paternal grandfather was Frank William Pitney (the son of John P. Pitney and Lydia Hanah Hunt). Frank was born in Melksham, Wiltshire Unitary Authority, Wiltshire, England.
