George Bernard Shaw, known as Bernard Shaw, was an Irish playwright, critic, polemicist, and political activist. His influence on Western theatre, culture, and politics extended from the 1880s to his death and beyond. He wrote more than sixty plays, including Man and Superman , Pygmalion , and Saint Joan .

George was the son of Lucinda Elizabeth (Gurly) and George Carr Shaw. He was from a Protestant family, of Irish and English descent. He was married to Irish political activist Charlotte Payne-Townshend, until her death.

George’s paternal grandfather was Bernard Shaw (the son of William Shaw and Esther English). Bernard was born in Kilkenny, Leinster, Ireland. William was the son of Robert Shaw and Mary Markham.

George’s paternal grandmother was named Frances Carr (the daughter of The Rev. E. Carr).

George’s maternal grandfather was Walter Bagnall Gurly (the son of Thomas Bagnall Gurly and Elizabeth McDonough). Walter was born in Belville, Co. Carlow, Ireland. Thomas was the son of Thomas Gurly and Elizabeth Tench, who were from Wexford.
