George Cukor was an American film director and producer. He won the Academy Award for Best Director for My Fair Lady (1964). He also directed the films What Price Hollywood? , A Bill of Divorcement , Our Betters , Little Women (1933), Dinner at Eight , David Copperfield (1935), Romeo and Juliet (1936), Camille , The Philadelphia Story , Gaslight (1944), Adam’s Rib , Born Yesterday , A Star Is Born (1954), Bhowani Junction , and Rich and Famous , among many others. He was one of the early directors of Gone with the Wind .

He was born on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, to Hungarian Jewish parents, Helen Ilona (Gross) and Viktor/Victor Farkas Cukor. His mother was born in Tokaj. His middle name, Dewey, was in honour of Spanish-American War hero, Admiral George Dewey.

George’s paternal grandfather was Joseph Cukor (the son of Farkas Volf Czukor and Rebek Czukor). Joseph was born in Kállósemjén, Nagykállói, Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg, Hungary.

George’s paternal grandmother was named Victoria Halpett.
