George Sisler was an American professional baseball player, and player-manager. A first baseman, he played for the St. Louis Browns, the Washington Senators, and the Boston Braves of Major League Baseball (MLB). He also managed the St. Louis Browns. He was nicknamed “Gorgeous George.”
George was the son of Mary Rebecca, a schoolteacher, and Cassius Clay Sisler, a schoolteacher and coal mine supervisor. He was partly raised in Akron. He was married to Kathleen Charlotte Holznagle, with whom he had four children, including professional baseball players George Sisler, Jr., who was also an executive, Dick Sisler, who was also a coach and manager, and Dave Sisler.
George’s paternal grandfather was the son of Lewis Sisler and Margaret Marsh. Margaret was the daughter of Adam Marsh and Margaret Catherine Esche.
George’s paternal grandmother was the daughter of Michael Justes and Margaret Hoy.
George’s maternal grandfather was named Pierce Whipple.
George’s maternal grandmother was Louisa Ann McFarland (the daughter of Daniel McFarland and Joanna Arnold). Daniel was the son of Daniel McFarland. Joanna was the daughter of Roba Bollou.
