George Weah is a Liberian humanitarian, politician, and professional footballer. He has been President of Liberia, from 22 January, 2018 to 22 January, 2024; as well as, a Member of the Senate of Liberia, from 14 January, 2015 to 22 January, 2018. A striker, he played for Young Survivors, Bong Range United, Mighty Barrolle, Invincible Eleven, Tonnerre Yaoundé, Monaco, Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan, Chelsea, Manchester City, Marseille, and Al Jazira, and the Liberia national team. He is regarded as one of the greatest African players of all time. In 1995, he was named FIFA World Player of the Year and won the Ballon d’Or.
He is the son of Anna Quayeweah, a merchant, and William T. Weah, a mechanic. George was raised in the slum Clara Town, in Monrovia. He is married to Jamaican-American businessperson, philanthropist, and advocate Clar Weah (born Clar Marie Duncan). He has four children; his three children with Clar include professional soccer players/footballers George Weah, Jr. and Timothy Weah.
George practised Islam for a time, and is now Catholic. He is a French citizen, and is fluent in French.
George’s paternal grandmother is named Emma Klonjlaleh Brown. George was largely raised by Emma.
