Geraldo Alckmin is a Brazilian politician and physician. He has been Vice President of Brazil, and Minister of Development, Industry, Trade and Services, both, since 1 January, 2023. He previously served as Mayor of Pindamonhangaba, from 31 January, 1977 to 15 May, 1982, a Member of the Chamber of Deputies, from 1 February, 1987 to 31 December, 1994, Lieutenant Governor of São Paulo, from 1 January, 1995 to 6 March, 2001, Governor of São Paulo, from 22 January, 2001 to 30 March, 2006, initially in an acting capacity; and again, from 1 January, 2011 to 6 April, 2018; and Secretary of Development of São Paulo, from 19 January, 2009 to 1 April, 2010. He was the Brazilian Social Democracy Party (PSDB) presidential nominee in 2006 and 2018.
Geraldo is the son of Myriam/Míriam Ramalho Penteado and Geraldo José Rodrigues Alckmin. He is married to professor Maria Lúcia Ribeiro Alckmin, with whom he has had three children. He is related to politician José Maria Alkmin, who was Vice President of Brazil, from 15 April, 1964 to 15 March, 1967, and jurist and professor José Geraldo Rodrigues de Alckmin.
The Alckmin name is often said to be of Arab (Lebanese) origin, which is not accurate. Geraldo is also said to be of Jewish heritage, which also does not appear to be accurate.
Geraldo’s Alcamin line can be traced to André da Costa de Alcamin, who was born c. 1660, in Viana do Castelo, Portugal.
Geraldo’s paternal grandfather was André Rodrigues Alckmin (the son of João Capistrano Ribeiro de Alckimim and Maria Joana Rodrigues). André was born in Baependi, Minas Gerais, Brazil. João was born in Cristina, Minas Gerais, the son of João Capistrano de Macedo Alckmin, whose father was born in Barcelinhos, Braga, Portugal, and whose maternal grandfather was also Portuguese; and of Maria Augusta Cesarina Ribeiro. Geraldo’s great-grandmother Maria was born in Taubaté, São Paulo, the daughter of João José Rodrigues and Jesuína Ribeiro dos Santos, whose father was born in Leiria, Portugal.
Geraldo’s paternal grandmother was Ida Thusnelda Lindegger Ravache (the daughter of Hans Alvin/Alwin Alexander Ravache and Ana/Anna Lindegger). Ida was born in São Paulo, Brazil. Hans was a German emigrant, from Schwerinstal, Köslin, Prussia, now Koszalin, West Pomeranian Voivodeship, Poland, and was the son of Wilhelm Carl Diedrich Adelbert Ravache and Ernestine Henriette Friederike Schneyer. Geraldo’s great-grandmother Anna was a Swiss emigrant, from Oberentfelden, Canton of Aargau, Switzerland, and was the daughter of Samuel Lindegger and Elizabeth/Elisabeth Regina/Rosina Müller/Mueller.
Geraldo’s maternal grandfather was Francisco Ramalho Penteado (the son of Sebastião Fortunato de Oliveira Penteado and Francisca Arruda Ramalho). Francisco was born in Araraquara, São Paulo, Brazil. Sebastião was the son of Sebastião de Oliveira Penteado and Isabel Wilhelmine Klein, who was born in Vienna, Austria. Francisca was born in São Bento, Araraquara, São Paulo, the daughter of Antonio Amancio Gomes Ramalho and Maria Soares de Arruda, whose paternal grandfather was born in Estrela, Portugal.
Geraldo’s maternal grandmother was named Maria Amelia.
