Giorgio Napolitano was an Italian politician. He served as President of Italy , from 15 May, 2006 to 14 January, 2015, as well as, President of the Chamber of Deputies, from 3 June, 1992 to 14 April, 1994, and Minister of the Interior, from 18 May, 1996 to 21 October, 1998. He was a Member of the Chamber of Deputies, from 25 June, 1953 to 15 May 1963, and again, from 5 June, 1968 to 8 May, 1996, as well as the European Parliament and the Senate of the Republic. He was the longest-lived president in the history of modern Italy. A member of the Italian Communist Party, and successive social democratic parties, he helped modernize/reform Italy’s socialist movement, and was considered a symbol of the Second Italian Republic. Known, and sometimes criticized for, moving the ceremonial role of President into a more political, executive, and influential one, he was nicknamed “Re Giorgio”/”King Giorgio.”

He was the son of Carolina Bobbio and Giovanni Napolitano, who was a liberal lawyer, and poet. His father was Neapolitan. His mother belonged to Piedmontese aristocracy. Bobbio is a place name in North Italy. His family moved to Padova in 1941. Giorgio was part of the Italian resistance during WWII.

He was married to Clio Maria Bittoni, until his death, with whom he had two children.
