Golda Meir was an Israeli teacher, kibbutznik, stateswoman, and politician. She served as the fourth Prime Minister of Israel , from 17 March, 1969 to 3 June, 1974. She was also Minister Plenipotentiary to the Soviet Union, from 10 September, 1948 to 25 January, 1949, Minister of Labor, from 10 March, 1949 to 19 June, 1956, Minister of Foreign Affairs, from 19 June, 1956 to 12 January, 1966, Leader of Labor Party, from 17 March, 1969 to 3 June, 1974, and Minister of Interior, from 16 July, 1970 to 1 September, 1970; as well as, a Member of the Knesset, from 12 February, 1949 to 3 June, 1974.
Prime Minister Meir was born in Kiev, the daughter of Bluma (Neiditch) and Moshe Itzhak Mabovitch, a carpenter. Her parents were born in Pinsk, Belarus. Her family moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, U.S., in the late 1900s, where they ran a grocery store.
Prime Minister Meir was married to Morris Meyerson, until his death. The couple had two children. Golda and Morris moved to Israel after marrying in 1917.
