Grace’s paternal grandfather was The Rev. Robert Stirling Phipps, Jr. (the son of Robert Stirling Phipps and Rose Marvelyn/Marvlyn Lapole). Grace’s grandfather Robert was born in Maryland, and had deep roots in the U.S. Grace’s great-grandfather Robert was the son of William Olmstead Phipps and Mary Lucretia Price. Rose was the daughter of Frank Theodore Lapole and Eva Leona Dean.
Grace’s paternal grandmother was Mary Barbee Gilliam (the daughter of Alonzo Barbee Gilliam and Mary Cornelia Clodfelter). Grace’s grandmother Mary was born in Virginia, and had deep lines in the U.S. Alonzo was the son of Levi Winfrey Gilliam and Mary Elizabeth “Mamie” Bassett. Grace’s great-grandmother Mary was the daughter of John Henry Clodfelter and Alice Della Brinson.
Grace’s maternal grandfather is Gary Arthur Van Gelder/Vangelder (the son of Arthur John Van Gelder and Marjorie Helen Otterbein). Gary was born in Osceola, Iowa. Arthur was the son of Egbert Van Gerlder and Jennie Giebink, who were the children of Dutch emigrants, from Gelderland. Marjorie was the daughter of George Carl Otterbein, whose parents were German; and of Emma A. Claus, whose grandparents were also all German, from Hannover.
Grace’s maternal grandmother is Carolyn Kay Van Stelten (the daughter of Garrett Van Stelten and Mabel Elizabeth Maske). Carolyn was born in Osceola, Iowa. Garrett was the son of Dutch immigrants, from Ermelo, Gelderland, Hendrik Van Stelten and Eibertje Den Herder. Mabel was the daughter of Charles Frank Maske and Margaret Susan Thomas, who were born in Iowa, and were of German descent.
