Grant Wood was an American painter. He is particularly known for his painting “American Gothic” (1930), depicting a farmer and his daughter, and for other depictions of the rural American Midwest. He was part of the realist Regionalism movement.

Grant was the son of Hattie DeEtte (Weaver) and Francis Maryville Wood. He was born in a rural area, and was later raised partly in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. His sister was artist and art teacher Nan Wood Graham, who is the woman depicted in American Gothic.

Grant’s paternal grandfather was named Joseph Wood. Joseph was born in Virginia.

Grant’s paternal grandmother was named Rebecca L. Shepherd. Rebecca was born in Virginia.
