Griff is the son of Lorraine and actor and director Stephen Furst (born Stephen Nelson Feuerstein). His brother is television and film composer Nathan Furst.

Griff’s paternal grandmother was named Lillian Nelson (the daughter of Morris Nelson/Nisenson and Sadie). Lillian was born in Virginia. Morris was born in Russia, the son of Hirsch Nisenson/Nissenson and Molly Itzkowitz. Sadie was also from Russia.
