Gunnar’s patrilineal ancestry can be traced back to his third great-grandfather, Albert Nilsson, later Nelson, who was a Swedish immigrant.
Gunnar’s paternal grandfather was Kenneth Dean Nelson (the son of Harvey Buerkman Nelson and Clairbel “Clair” Snelling McLain). Kenneth was American, from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Harvey was of three quarters Swedish, and one quarter Norwegian, descent, and was the son of Axel Friedolf Nelson and Anna Buerkman. Clairbel was the daughter of Herbert Glen McLain and Grace Longfellow.
Gunnar’s paternal grandmother was Berta Guðbjörg Rafnsdóttir (the daughter of Rafn Júlíus Guðberg Einarsson and Særún Árný Magnúsdóttir). Berta was born in Ólafsfjörður. Rafn was the son of Einar Brynjólfsson and Þorstína Þorsteinsdóttir. Særún was the daughter of Magnús Sigurður Sigurðarson and Ása Ingibjörg Sæmundsdóttir.
