He was born in Mannheim, to Turkish parents, from Trabzon. He represents Turkey at the international level. His brother is professional footballer Muhammed Çalhanoğlu. His cousin is professional footballer Kerim Çalhanoğlu.
Hakan is married to Sinem Gündoğdu, with whom he has three children.
