Hannah Gross is a Canadian actress. Her roles include the films I Used to Be Darker , Christmas, Again ; Unless , Marjorie Prime , The Mountain (2018), Her Smell , Colewell , Joker (2019), Disappearance at Clifton Hill , Tesla , Falling , Flashback (2020), The Adults , and Infinite Summer ; and the series Mindhunter , The Sinner , Deadwax , Essex County , Zero Day , and The Savant .
She is the daughter of actress Martha Burns and actor, producer, director, singer, and writer Paul Gross .
Hannah’s paternal grandfather was Robert “Bob” Gross (the son of Charles Casper/Caspar Grosz and Arnetta A. Smith/Schmidt). Charles was born in Ontario, the son of George Grosz, who was born in Baden-Württemberg, Germany; and of Susannah Schneider, who was born in Ontario, to German parents. Arnetta was born in Ontario, the daughter of Henry Schmidt and Bertha Pleothner, who were born in Ontario, both of them to German parents.
Hannah’s paternal grandmother was Irene Dunne (the daughter of Michael Joseph “Mike” Dunne and Jean McAree). Michael was born in Ballyraggan, Kildare, Ireland, the son of Patrick Dunne and Annie/Anne Marie Murphy. Jean was born in Coatbridge, Lanark, Scotland, the daughter of an Irish father, Hugh McAree, and of a Scottish mother, Jessie Finlayson Sinclair.
Hannah’s maternal grandfather was James William Burns, OC, OM (the son of Dr. Charles William Burns and Helen Gladys MacKay). James was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and was director emeritus at the Power Corporation of Canada. Charles was the son of William Charles Burns, whose grandparents were Irish, including from what is now Northern Ireland; and of Isabelle McLeod, whose parents were Scottish. Hannah’s great-grandmother Helen was the daughter of Scottish emigrants, James MacKay, from Latheron, Caithness, and Jeannie Isabella Milne.
Hannah’s maternal grandmother was Barbara Mary Copeland (the daughter of Thomas George Franklin Copeland and Mary Aileen Murphy). Barbara was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Thomas was the son of Thomas Wood Bowes Copeland, an English emigrant, from Crossgate, Durham; and of Mary Edith Carr, whose father had partially deep roots in the U.S., and whose mother was of Cornish descent. Hannah’s great-grandmother Mary was the daughter of Gabriel B. Murphy, whose parents were Irish; and of Martha Armstrong, whose father was born in England, and whose mother was Northern Irish.
