Hattie McDaniel was an American actress, professional singer and songwriter, and comedian. She won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for Gone with the Wind (1939). She was the first African-American to win an Academy Award.

Hattie was the daughter of Susan (Holbert) and Henry McDaniel, who were former slaves. Her father fought in the Civil War, with the 122nd U.S. Colored Troops. Her mother sang gospel. Hattie was raised in Fort Collins and Denver, Colorado.

Her siblings were actors Sam McDaniel (Samuel Rufus McDaniel) and Etta McDaniel.

Hattie was married to Howard Hickman, until his death, and to George Langford, until his death.
