A Republican, he has been U.S. Ambassador to the Bahamas, since December 9, 2025; and, previously, Co-Chair of the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, from 2018 to 2022. He is a Heisman Trophy winner.

Herschel is the son of Christine and Willis Walker. He was raised in Wrightsville, Georgia. Herschel is married to Julie Blanchard. He has at least four children, including a son, media personality Christian Walker, with his former wife Cindy DeAngelis Grossman.

In 2022, Herschel stated, “my mom just told me that my… grandmother, was full-blood Cherokee.” He has often referenced this Cherokee ancestry. His mother stated to the press that her own paternal grandmother was “kin to Cherokee,” but she does not “know too much about how she was connected.”
