Hikaru Utada (宇多田光), or simply Utada, is a Japanese-American singer, songwriter, and producer. Utada has sold more than 50 million records. Utada is also known as Hikki and Cubic U.

Utada was born in New York, to Japanese parents, Keiko Fuji (born Junko Abe), a popular Enka singer and actress, and Teruzane Utada, a music producer. Utada’s father is from Tokuji, now Yamaguchi. Utada’s mother was born in Ichinoseki, Iwate Prefecture. Utada was raised on the Upper East Side, New York. The family moved to Tokyo, Japan, when Utada was eleven for Utada’s parents’ work, later coming back to New York for college. Utada has a son with her former husband. Utada is a citizen of Japan and the U.S.

Hikaru’s maternal grandparents, Tsuyoshi Abe and Sumiko Takeyama, were traditional rōkyoku musicians. Tsuyoshi was a singer. Sumiko was a shamisen player.
