Hope Lange was an American film, stage, and television actress. Her roles include the films Bus Stop (1956), The True Story of Jesse James , Peyton Place , for which she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress; The Young Lions , In Love and War (1958), The Best of Everything , Wild in the Country , Pocketful of Miracles , Love Is a Ball , Jigsaw (1968), Death Wish (1974), The Prodigal (1983), I Am the Cheese , A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy’s Revenge , Blue Velvet , Tune in Tomorrow , Clear and Present Danger , and Just Cause ; the shows The Ghost & Mrs. Muir , The New Dick Van Dyke Show , and Knight & Daye ; and the mini-series Beulah Land .
Hope was the daughter of Minnette/Minette M. and John George Lange. Her father was a cellist, a music arranger for Florenz Ziegfeld, and a conductor for Henry Cohen. Her mother was an actress. She was raised mostly in Greenwich Village, New York.
Hope was married to theatrical producer Charles Hollerith, Jr., until her death. She had two children, photographer Patricia Murray and actor Christopher Murray, with her former husband, actor Don Murray .
Hope’s paternal grandfather was named Frederick Lange. Frederick was German.
Hope’s paternal grandmother was named Sophie Vottler. Sophie was German.
Hope’s maternal grandfather was William Albert Buddecke (the son of Johann Conrad Buddeke and Amalie Thomann). William was born in St. Louis, Missouri, to a German father and a Swiss-German mother.
