Hoyt Wilhelm was an American professional baseball player. A pitcher, he played for the New York Giants, the St. Louis Cardinals, the Cleveland Indians, the Baltimore Orioles, the Chicago White Sox, the California Angels, the Atlanta Braves, the Chicago Cubs, and the Los Angeles Dodgers of Major League Baseball (MLB). He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1985.
Hoyt was the son of Ethel and John Alexander Wilhelm.
Hoyt’s paternal grandfather was Caleb Benjamin Wilhelm (the son of Moses Wilhelm and Penelope Litaker). Caleb was born in Concord, Cabarrus County, North Carolina. Moses was born in Rowan, North Carolina, the son of Lewis Wilhelm and Margaret Rebekah Bostian. Penelope was the daughter of Jacob/John Litaker and Elizabeth Cope.
Hoyt’s paternal grandmother was Sarah Ann Gibson (the daughter of Robert Berry Fowler, and of possibly Elizabeth Ward). Robert was born in Greenville County, South Carolina, the son of The Rev. John Garner Fowler and Sarah Ann “Sallie” Gibson, whose own parents were English, her father a minister from Woolwich, London, and her mother from Southampton, Hampshire.
Hoyt’s maternal grandfather was John Alexander Stanley (the son of Jonathan Stanley and Theresa Tucker). John was born in North Carolina.
Hoyt’s maternal grandmother was Victoria Virginia Myrph/Murph (the daughter of Samuel Myrph and Catherine Susanna Cline). Victoria was born in Cabarrus County, North Carolina. Catherine was born in North Carolina, the daughter of John Cline and Eleanor Joiner.
