Hunter Schafer is an American actress, fashion model, and LGBTQ rights activist. She is known for starring on the show Euphoria , and in the films Belle (2022), in voice performance; The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes , Cuckoo (2024), and Kinds of Kindness . She is a transgender woman.

Hunter is the daughter of Katy and The Rev. Mac Schafer, a Presbyterian pastor. The family moved between churches and congregations in New Jersey, Arizona, and then Raleigh, North Carolina. In 2016, she was the youngest plaintiff in Carcaño v. McCrory, a lawsuit against the Public Facilities Privacy & Security Act, in North Carolina, which prevented trans people from using the bathroom corresponding to their gender identity. The bill was subsequently repealed.

Hunter’s paternal grandfather was Carl Walter Schafer (the son of MacHenry George Schafer and Gertrude Herrick). Carl was born in Chicago, Illinois, and had partly deep roots in the U.S., from both parents. He was treasurer of Princeton University. MacHenry was the son of Carl Wilhelm Schafer, whose parents were German, and of Viola Etulyn Boardman. Gertrude was the daughter of Walter Dwight Herrick and Gertrude Gouverneur Cotsworth.

Hunter’s paternal grandmother was June Elizabeth Perry (the daughter of James Jackson “Jim” Perry and Ferris Hathaway Missimer). June was born in Tennessee, and had partially deep roots in the U.S. James was the son of Nathaniel/Nat T. Perry and Mary E. Jackson. Ferris was the daughter of Harry Elmer Missimer and Ruby Irene Hathaway.

Hunter’s maternal grandfather was James Randolph “Randy” Brown, Jr. (the son of James Randolph Brown and Myra Louise Boynton). Hunter’s grandfather Randy was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and had deep roots in the U.S. Hunter’s great-grandfather James was born in Vienna, Dooly, Georgia, the son of Cecil B. Brown and Jewell Powell. Myra was born in Atlanta, the daughter of Charles Edward Boynton and Marie Estelle Pattillo.

Hunter’s maternal grandmother is Mary Jane Campbell (the daughter of Joseph Walker Campbell and Alys Rachel Frazee). Mary Jane was born in Florida, and had deep lines in America. Joseph was born in Monticello, Richmond, Georgia, the son of Joseph Johnson Campbell and Elizabeth Wayne Campbell, whose paternal grandfather was born in Greenock, Renfrewshire, Dunbartonshire, Scotland. Hunter’s great-grandmother Alys was born in Brooksville, Hernando, Florida, the daughter of Roland Harvey Frazee and Katie A. Kirk.
