Ian Astbury is an English singer and songwriter. He is the lead singer of rock band The Cult. He was also a member of rock supergroup and side project The Wondergirls, with Jay Gordon , Shannon Leto , Mark McGrath , Ryan Shuck , and Scott Weiland .
Ian is the son of Marion (Lindsay) and Robert Astbury, a merchant seaman. He grew up in Merseyside, Liverpool, Glasgow, and later moved with his family to Canada.
Ian has stated , when asked if he traveled a lot growing up:
Yeah, I never had a real sense of identity in terms of cultural identity. My mother was Scots, my father was from Birkenhead, Merseyside area. And I was growing up in North America as well. Cultural identity or a sense of nationalism, maybe you can define it by language and ethnicity, but outside of that not really. So I just made it up as I went along.
