Sir Ian McGeechan is a Scottish rugby union player, coach, and teacher. A fly-half and outside centre, he played for Headingley, and for the Scotland national team and British & Irish Lions. He coached the Scotland national team, initially as an assistant; Lions, including in midweek side; Northampton Saints, London Wasps, and Bath.

He is the son of Hilda and Robert Matthew McGeechan.

Ian’s maternal grandfather was named Ernest Sherer (the son of August Sherer and Jane). Ernest was born in Leeds, Yorkshire, England. August was German, from Baden.
