J. P. Morgan was an American financier and investment banker. He dominated corporate finance on Wall Street throughout the Gilded Age and Progressive Era. As the head of the banking firm that ultimately became known as J.P. Morgan and Co., he was a driving force behind the wave of industrial consolidations in the U.S. at the turn of the twentieth century. He financed the creation of American Bridge, General Electric, International Harvester, International Mercantile Marine, Southern Railway, and U.S. Steel. His Morgan “money trust” also owned General Electric, U.S. Steel, International Mercantile Marine, Aetna, Pullman Palace Car Company, Western Union, and many railroads.

J. P. was the son of Juliet (Pierpont) and Junius Spencer Morgan, who was a banker and financier, of the influential Morgan family. He was of Colonial American (English) descent, with deep roots in Connecticut and Massachusetts. J. P. was married to Amelia Sturges, until her death, and then to Frances Louise Tracy, until his death. He had four children, including banker and finance executive J. P. Morgan, Jr. and philanthropist Anne Morgan, with Frances.

J. P.’s paternal grandfather was Joseph Morgan, Jr. (the son of Capt. Joseph Morgan and Experience Smith). J. P.’s grandfather Joseph was born in West Springfield, Hampden, Massachusetts. J. P.’s great-grandfather Joseph was born in Springfield, the son of Joseph Morgan, whose paternal grandfather was from Glamorgan, Wales; and of Mary Stebbins. J. P.’s great-grandmother Experience was born in Chicopee, Massachusetts, the daughter of David Smith, Jr. and Experience Chapin.

J. P.’s paternal grandmother was Sarah/Sally Spencer (the daughter of Samuel Spencer and Martha Eells). Sally was born in Middletown, Middlesex, Connecticut. Samuel was born in Middletown, the son of John Spencer and Elizabeth Taylor. Martha was born in Middlesex, the daughter of Nathaniel Eells and Alice/Ellis White.

J. P.’s maternal grandfather was The Rev. John Pierpont (the son of James Pierpont III and Elizabeth Collins). The Rev. John was born in Litchfield, Litchfield Co., Connecticut, and was a writer. James was born in New Haven, New Haven Co., Connecticut, the son of James Pierpoint, Jr., whose father was a founding trustee of Yale University, and whose paternal grandparents were English, with roots in Kent; and of Anne Sherman. J. P.’s great-grandmother Elizabeth was born in Litchfield, the daughter of Charles Collins, whose father was first minister of Litchfield; and of Anne Huntingdon.

J. P.’s maternal grandmother was Mary Sheldon Lord (the daughter of Lynde Lord, Jr. and Mary Lyman). Mary was born in Litchfield, Connecticut. Lynde was born in Litchfield, the son of Lynde Lord and Lois Sheldon. Mary was born in Northhampton, Massachusetts, the daughter of Capt. Joseph Lyman, Jr. and Mary Sheldon. J. P.’s great-great-grandmothers Lois Sheldon and Mary Sheldon were first cousins.
