Jackie Robinson was an American professional baseball player. A second baseman, he played for the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro Leagues, and ten seasons for the Brooklyn Dodgers of Major League Baseball (MLB). He was known as the first African-American to play in MLB in the modern era, breaking the color barrier.

Jackie was the son of Mallie (McGriff) and Jerry Robinson. His middle name, Roosevelt, was after President Theodore Roosevelt, who died a few weeks before Jackie’s birth. His family moved to Pasadena, California, when he was a small child. Jackie was married to nurse Rachel Robinson, until his death, with whom he had three children.

Jackie’s paternal grandfather was Anthony Robinson (the son of Nelson Robinson and Priscilla Murry). Anthony was born in Florida.

Jackie’s paternal grandmother was named Florence Hays (the daughter of Clara). Florence was born in Georgia.

Jackie’s maternal grandfather was named Washington “Wash” McGriff (the son of Prince McGriff and Jenie). Washington was born in Georgia or West Virginia.
