James DeMonaco is an American screenwriter, director, producer, and filmmaker. He created The Purge franchise. He has directed the films Staten Island (2009), The Purge (2013), The Purge: Anarchy , The Purge: Election Year , and the autobiographical This Is the Night , all of which he wrote, and The Home (2025), which he co-wrote. He also wrote the films Assault on Precinct 13 (2005), The First Purge , and The Forever Purge , and co-wrote the films Jack (1996), The Negotiator , and Skinwalkers (2007). He created the shows The Kill Point and The Purge , and co-created the show Ryan Caulfield: Year One . He also wrote for all three, as well as for the show Crash .
He was raised on Staten Island and in Brooklyn, New York, as well as in Paris, France.
