James Joyce was an Irish novelist, poet, and literary critic. He wrote the poetry collections Chamber Music and Pomes Penyeach , the short story collection Dubliners (1914), the novels A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man , Ulysses (1922), and Finnegans Wake ; and the play Exiles (1918). His works Stephen Hero , Giacomo Joyce , The Cats of Copenhagen , and Finn’s Hotel were published posthumously.

James was the son of Mary Jane and John Stanislaus Joyce, who was a rate collector and secretary. His parents were born in Cork. He was given the name Aloysius at his confirmation, becoming James Augustine Aloysius Joyce. He was a brother of Sisters of Mercy nun and musician Mary Gertrude Joyce; and teacher, scholar, diarist, and writer Stanislaus Joyce. He was partly raised in the small town Bray. James was married to Nora Barnacle, his muse, until his death. Nora was born in Galway. The couple had two children, including professional dancer Lucia Joyce.

James’s paternal grandfather was James Augustine Joyce (the son of John Joyce and Frances Flynn, or of James Augustine Joyce and Anne McCann). James’s grandfather James was born in North Main Street, Cork City, Cork.

James’s paternal grandmother was Helena/Ellen O’Connell (the daughter of John O’Connell and Ellen McCann). James’s grandmother Ellen was born in Cork, County Cork, and was said to be related to Daniel O’Connell, the political leader of Ireland’s Catholic majority in the first half of the 1800s. John was a Cork alderman, and was the son of Maurice Morgan O’Connell.

James’s maternal grandfather was John Patrick Murray (the son of William Murray and Bridget Byrne). John was born in Tulcon, Leitrim, Ireland.

James’s maternal grandmother was Margaret Theresa Flynn (the daughter of Patrick Flynn and Mary Catherine Fitzsimmons). Margaret was born in Terenure, Dublin, Ireland.
