James Rothschild is a British financier.
James is the son of Anita Patience (Guinness), a socialite, and Amschel Mayor James de Rothschild. On his father’s side, James descends from the prominent, international Rothschild banking dynasty, who were originally German Jews, from Frankfurt. The family established highly successful branches in London, Paris, Vienna, and Naples, significantly shaping European financial history. On his mother’s side, he is a member of the “banking line” of the Guinness family, founders of Guinness Mahon in 1836; he descends from Samuel Guinness (1727–1795), the brother of Arthur Guinness.
James descends from the original Rothschild ancestors, and from the original Guinness ancestors, twice, each; as his Rothschild great-great-grandparents were second cousins, and his Guinness great-great-grandparents were third cousins, once removed.
James is married to American businessperson, socialite, and model Nicky Hilton Rothschild , of the Hilton hotel chain family. The couple has three children.
James’s paternal grandfather was Nathaniel Mayer Victor Rothschild, 3rd Baron Rothschild (the son of Nathaniel Charles Rothschild and Rózsika von Wertheimstein). Victor was a businessperson and politician. James’s great-grandfather Nathaniel was born in St George, Hanover Square, London, the son of Nathaniel Mayer Rothschild, 1st Baron Rothschild; and of Emma Louisa von Rothschild, Baroness Rothschild. Nathaniel and Emma were second cousins, as the great-grandchildren of Mayer Amschel Rothschild and Gutle Schnapper.
James’s great-grandmother Rózsika von Wertheimstein was born in Nagyvárad, Austria-Hungary, the daughter of Baron Alfred Josef, Ludwig von Wertheimstein, who was from Vienna, Austria; and of Marie Grosz, who was from Nagyvárad, Bihar, Hungary. Baron von Wertheimstein was said to have been the first titled Jew in Austria.
James’s paternal grandmother was Teresa Georgina Rothschild, Baroness Rothschild (née Mayor, the daughter of Robert/Robin John Grote Mayor and Katherine Beatrice Meinertzhagen). Teresa was born in London, England, and was a counter-intelligence officer and magistrate. James’s great-grandfather Robert was born in Twickenham, Greater London, the son of Joseph Bickersteth Mayor, who was born in Cape of Good Hope, South Africa; and of Alexandrina Jessie Grote. James’s great-grandmother Katherine was the daughter of Daniel Meinertzhagen, who was of German descent; and of Georgina Potter.
James’s maternal grandfather was James Edward Alexander Rundell Guinness (the son of Arthur Rundell Guinness and Frances Patience Wright). James Guinness was an investment banker. Arthur was the son of Howard Rundell Guinness and Mary Alice Guinness. Howard and Mary Alice were third cousins, once removed, as Howard was the great-great-great-grandson of Richard Guinness and Elizabeth Read, and Mary Alice was their great-great-granddaughter. Frances was the daughter of E.F. Wright.
James’s maternal grandmother was Pauline Vivien Mander (the daughter of Lt-Col. Howard Vivien Mander, MC and Monica Christian Hardy). Lt-Col. Howard was the son of Benjamin Howard Mander and Lilian Nelson.
