Janet Jagan was an American-Guyanese politician. She served as Prime Minister and First Vice President of Guyana, from 17 March, 1997 to 19 December, 1997, and President of Guyana , from 19 December, 1997 to 11 August, 1999. She was previously First Lady of Guyana, as she was married to politician and dentist Cheddi Jagan, who served as President of Guyana, from 9 October, 1992 to 6 March, 1997, his death. She was nicknamed “Bhaujie”/”Bhowgie,” meaning sister-in-law.
Janet was the daughter of Katherine/Kathryn (Kronberg) and Charles Brown Rosenberg/Roberts. She had two children, including politician and dentist Joey Jagan, with Cheddi. Cheddi was a Hindu, of Indian parentage. Her niece was historian, professor, writer, and director Suzanne Wasserman.
Janet’s paternal grandfather was Joseph Rosenberg (the son of Herman/Himan Rosenberg and Jennett Moses). Joseph was born in St. Louis, Missouri, to Polish Jewish parents.
Janet’s paternal grandmother was Rosa Brown (the daughter of Charles Brown and Henrietta Schwartz). Rosa was born in Albany, New York, to a Polish Jewish father and a German Jewish mother.
Janet’s maternal grandfather was Adolph/Adolf Kronberg (the son of Leo Kronberg and Pearl Landish Green). Adolph was born in Iași, Romania.
Janet’s maternal grandmother was Rosa Applebaum/Apfelbaum (the daughter of Morris Applebaum/Apfelbaum and Johanna/Hanna Klein). Rosa was born in Hungary/Austria.
