Jetsun Pema is the queen consort and Dragon Queen of the Kingdom of Bhutan (Druk Gyaltsuen, literally meaning “Dragon Queen”), as the wife of King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck , since 13 October, 2011. They have three children, including His Royal Highness The Gyalsey .
Jetsun is the daughter of Dhondup Gyaltshen and Sonam Chuki. Sonam comes from the family of Bumthang Pangtey, one of the oldest noble families in Bhutan. Jetsun’s name uses Bhutanese naming customs. Bhutanese people have two given names, neither of which is a surname or family name unless they are descended from royal or noble lineages.
Jetsun’s paternal grandfather is Ugyen Dorji Tangbi (the son of Ugyen Tshering, Dzongpon of Trashigang, and of Dorji Wangmo).
Jetsun’s paternal grandmother is Aum Karma Yangzom (the daughter of Thinley Topgay, Dzongpon of Trashigang, and of Aum Lemo). Thinley was the son of Sonam Tshering, Dzongpon of Trashigang, and of Aum Chomo.
Jetsun’s maternal grandfather is Thinley Namgyal, Dzongpon of Zhemgang (the son of Tenzin Thinley, Khyungtrul Pema Wangchen, and of Decho Dorji). Tenzin was the son of Sonam Tenzin and Sonam Lhatsho. Decho was the daughter of Chimi Dorji, Dzongpon of Thimphu, and of Yeshay Choden.
Jetsun’s maternal grandmother is Aum Rinchen (the daughter of Tshering and Aum Lekpa).
