Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck is the reigning Druk Gyalpo or Dragon King of the Kingdom of Bhutan, since 9 December, 2006; he was coronated on 6 November, 2008, and is the fifth to occupy the position.
He is the son of Jigme Singye Wangchuck, who was born in Kathmandu, Nepal, and Tshering Yangdon, who was born in Nobgang, Punakha. He is married to Jetsun Pema , with whom he has three children, including His Royal Highness the Gyalsey .
Khesar’s patrilineal ancestry can be traced to his 23rd great-grandfather, Sumthrang Chorji (1179-1265).
Khesar’s paternal grandfather was Jigme Dorji Wangchuck (the son of Jigme Wangchuck and Phuntsho Choden). Khesar’s grandfather Jigme was born in Trongsa, Trongsa. Khesar’s great-grandfather Jigme was the son of Ugyen Wangchuck and Tsundue/Tsuendru Pema Lhamo. Phuntsho was the daughter of Jamyang, Chumed Zhalgno, of the Tamzhing Choji family, and of Decho Dorji.
Khesar’s paternal grandmother is Kesang Choden (the daughter of Raja Sonam Tobgye/Topgay Dorji and Rani Mayum/Mayeum Chonying/Choying Wangmo Dorji). Kesang was born in Kalimpong, Bengal, British India, now West Bengal, India. Sonam was the son of Raja Ugyen Dorji. Mayeum was Sikkimese [Bhutia, distant Lepcha], from Gangtok, now part of India, and was the daughter of Thutob Namgyal and Yeshay Dolma.
Khesar’s maternal grandfather was Yab Ugyen Dorji (the son of Sangay Tenzin and Dorji Om). Khesar’s grandfather Ugyen Dorji was born in Kungacholing, Paro. Sangay was the son of Kuenga Gyeltshen and Ngodrup Pem. Khesar’s great-grandmother Dorji was the daughter of Gyeltshen Dorji, 5th Sersang Lang, and of Abi Yum Yangchen Droelma.
Khesar’s maternal grandmother is Yum Thuiji Zam (the daughter of Lopen Duba and Aum Ugay Dem).
