Jill Scott is an American singer, songwriter, model, poet, and actress. She has starred in the films Cavedweller , Hounddog , Why Did I Get Married? , and its sequel, Why Did I Get Married Too? ; Baggage Claim , Get On Up , and Love Beats Rhymes , on the shows Girlfriends , The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency , Black Panther , in voice performance; Black Lightning , and First Wives Club , and in the made-for-tv movies Steel Magnolias , With This Ring , and Flint .

Jill was raised a Jehovah’s Witness. She grew up with her mother Joyce. She has a son with her former fiancé, her drummer Li’l John Roberts. DNA testing shows that Jill has ancestry from the Jola people of Guinea-Bissau.

Jill’s maternal grandfather was named Lenwood/Linwood Norman. Lenwood was born in Skinnersville, North Carolina.

Jill’s maternal grandmother was Blarnnie/Blonnie/Blondie Ford (the daughter of Dallas Ford and Annie/Annis Braswell). Blonnie was born in North Carolina, to parents who were also born in the state. Dallas was the son of John Ford and Nellie. Annie was born in Edgecombe County, the daughter of Warren Braswell and Amy J. Pitt.
