Joe Anders is an American-British actor, screenwriter, and composer. His roles include the films 1917 (2019), Lee (2023), and Bonus Track ; and the shows I Am Ruth and Cape Fear . He wrote the film Goodbye June , which his mother directed. He has also been billed as Joe Mendes.
Joe was born in New York City, New York, the son of British parents, actress, singer, and writer Kate Winslet and stage and film director Sam Mendes . He was raised between New York City, and England. His maternal half-sister is actress Mia Threapleton. His maternal aunts, Anna and Beth, have also acted; and his maternal great-uncle, Robert Bridges, was an actor. His maternal great-grandparents, Linda and Archibald Bridges, founded the Reading Repertory Theatre. His stepfather, businessperson Edward Abel Smith/Ned Rocknroll, is the nephew, sister’s son, of business magnate and philanthropist Richard Branson . His stepmother is trumpet soloist, arranger, and producer Alison Balsom.
Joe’s paternal grandfather was Jameson Peter Mendes, an academic (the son of Alfred Hubert Mendes and Ellen Perachini). Jameson was born in New York, and had Portuguese Madeiran and Italian ancestry. Joe’s great-grandfather Alfred Mendes was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad, of what is sometimes described as “Portuguese Creole” origin. He was a writer, whose WWI experiences inspired Sam Mendes’s film 1917 . Alfred was the son of Alfred Mendes, whose parents were from Madeira, Portugal; and of Isabella/Isabelle/Belle Jardine/Jardim. Joe’s great-great-grandfather Alfred served as vice-consul for Portugal, from 1931 to 1948. Joe’s great-grandmother Ellen was born in Uruguay, to Italian parents, Santiago Peracchini/Perachini, who was born in Florence, Tuscany; and Virginia Giannetti.
Joe’s paternal grandmother was Valerie Mendes, a novelist, children’s writer, and poet (born Valerie Helene Barnett, the daughter of Reuben Barnett and Jane Herschman/Hersham). Valerie was born in England, to a Jewish family. Jane was born in Liverpool, Lancashire.
Joe’s maternal grandfather was Roger John Winslet, an actor and labourer (the son of Charles John William Winslet and Blanche/Blanch Florence Sims). Charles was born in Reading, Berkshire, the son of Charles Winslet and Emily Mary Wells. Joe’s great-grandmother Blanche was born in Kensington, London, the daughter of George Frederick V. Sims, who was born in Cardiff, Glanmorganshire, Wales, and was of one quarter Welsh descent; and of Florence Edith Bick, whose own maternal grandmother was from Ireland.
Joe’s maternal grandmother was Sally Anne (Bridges), a nanny and waitress (the daughter of Archibald Ottewill/Oliver Bridges and Linda Elsie Plumb). Archibald was born in Hackney, London, the son of Robert Tilby Bridges and Louisa Amy Hales. Linda was born in Westminster St. Margaret, London, the daughter of George William Plumb and Florence Theodelinda Lidman. Florence’s father, Alfred Johansson Lidman, was a Swedish emigrant, from Enslöf, Halland County.
