Joe Cronin was an American professional baseball player, manager, and general manager. A shortstop, he played for the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Washington Senators, and the Boston Red Sox of Major League Baseball (MLB). He was manager of the Washington Senators and the Boston Red Sox. In 1956, he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame as a Boston Red Sox player. He was president of the American League (AL) for 14 years.

Joe was the son of Mary J. and Jeremiah J. Cronin. His father was an Irish emigrant from Cork, Ireland. His mother was born in California, to Irish parents. He was married to Mildred Robertson, with whom he had four children. Mildred was the niece of pitcher, manager, and team owner Clark Griffith.

Joe’s maternal grandparents were named James Carolan and Bridget Kelly. James was born in County Meath, Ireland.
