Joel Stransky is a South African rugby union player and television commentator. A fly-half, he played with L’Aquila, San Donà, and Leicester Tigers, as well as Natal and Western Province, and the South Africa national team. He is known for scoring the dramatic winning drop-goal in the 1995 Rugby World Cup final.

Joel is the son of Isabel/Ishbel and Barry Stransky.

He was raised in a Jewish household, and had a Bar Mitzvah ceremony. The Stransky family is of Czech Jewish origin. It appears that Joel’s mother is of English, non-Jewish, background.

Joel’s maternal great-grandparents were born in England. They later moved to South Africa.

Joel was played by Scott Eastwood in the 2009 Clint Eastwood-directed film Invictus.
