John C. Frémont, nicknamed The Pathfinder, was an American explorer, military officer, soldier, and politician. A Republican, he was Military Governor of California, from January 19, 1847 to February 13, 1847, U.S. Shadow Senator from California, from December 20, 1849 to September 10, 1850, a U.S. Senator from California, from September 10, 1850 to March 3, 1851, and Governor of Arizona Territory, from October 6, 1878 to October 11, 1881. He served in the U.S. Army from 1838 to 1848, and in 1890, and in the Union Army from 1861 to 1864.

He was the Republican Party’s nominee for President of the United States in 1856 . He was the Republican Party’s first nominee for President, having been so chosen two years after the party’s creation in 1854 as an anti-slavery party.

In the 1840s, he led four expeditions into the American West, earning him the nickname The Pathfinder.

He was the son of Anne Beverley (Whiting) Pryor and Charles Frémon. His father was French-Canadian. His mother had English ancestry. His wife was writer and political activist Jessie Benton Frémont, whose own father, Thomas Hart Benton, was a politician, who was a U.S. Senator from Missouri, from 1821 to 1851. The couple had five children.

John’s maternal grandfather was Thomas Whiting (the son of Henry Whiting and Anne Beverley). Thomas was born in Virginia. Henry was the son of Henry Whiting and Apphia Hughes. Anne was the daughter of Peter Beverley, who was born in Virginia, to English parents, from Yorkshire, and of Elizabeth Peyton.

John’s maternal grandmother was Elizabeth Seawell (the daughter of John Seawell and Jane Boswell). Elizabeth was born in Virginia. John was the son of Joseph Seawell and Elizabeth. Jane was the daughter of Thomas Boswell.
