John Madden was an American professional football coach, and sportscaster and color commentator. An offensive tackle, he was signed with the Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League (NFL). He was an offensive line coach, and then head coach, for Hancock; a defensive coordinator for San Diego State; and a linebackers coach, and then head coach, of the Oakland Raiders.
He was the son of Mary Margaret and Earl Russell Madden, an auto mechanic. He was raised in Daly City, California. John was married to Virginia Fields, with whom he had two children. His sons, Joseph and Michael, both played college football, as did his grandson Jesse.
John’s paternal grandfather was William Augustus “Will” Madden (the son of John Franklin Madden and Elizabeth Wert). William was born in Eldora, Hardin County, Iowa. John’s great-grandfather John was born in Pennsylvania, the son of Andrew Madden and Elizabeth Porter. John’s great-grandmother Elizabeth was born in Pennsylvania, the daughter of Jacob Wert and Sarah Feber, and was of German descent.
