Joseph Pulitzer was an American newspaper publisher, and politician. He published the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and the New York World, and is known for his Pulitzer Prize to journalists, and for his work to keep the Statue of Liberty in New York. As a Republican, he was a Member of the Missouri House of Representatives, from January 5, 1870 to March 24, 1870. As a member of the Democratic Party, he served as a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from New York, from March 4, 1885 to April 10, 1886.

Joseph was born in Makó, Kingdom of Hungary, Austrian Empire, the son of Elize (Berger) and Fülöp Pulitzer, a businessperson. His parents were both Jewish. Joseph lived in Pest, before moving to Boston, Massachusetts, U.S., in 1864.

Joseph was married to Katherine “Kate” Davis, until his death. The couple had five children, including heir, newspaper publisher, and author Ralph Pulitzer. His grandson was newspaperman and publisher Joseph Pulitzer, Jr.

It is sometimes said that Joseph’s mother was Catholic. This does not appear to be accurate. Ethnically-speaking, at least, she was Jewish.

Joseph’s paternal grandfather was named Mihály Pulitzer (the son of Baruch Simon Pulitzer, and of a mother surnamed Lőrintz/Löbl/Lébl). Mihály was born in Makó, Csanád.

Joseph’s paternal grandmother was named Rosalie Schwab (the daughter of Salamon Schwab). Rosalie was born in Csongrád. Salamon was born in Csongrád, the son of Wolf Schwab.

Joseph’s maternal grandfather was named Lázár Berger.
