Josh Shapiro is an American politician and attorney. A member of the Democratic Party, he has served as Governor of Pennsylvania, since January 17, 2023. He was previously Chair of the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners, from January 3, 2012 to January 17, 2017, and Attorney General of Pennsylvania, from January 17, 2017 to January 17, 2023.
He was raised in Dresher, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. His father was in the U.S. Navy. Josh is married to clinical social worker Lori Ferrara Shapiro, with whom he has four children. He practices Conservative Judaism.
Josh’s paternal grandfather was Morton J. Shapiro (the son of Max Mendel Shapiro and Fannie M. Fischer). Morton was born in Pennsylvania, to Jewish emigrants. Max was born in Gatchina, Russia, the son of Israel Shapiro and Sarah Gittel. Fannie was born in Poland, the daughter of Abraham Fischer and Chaye Feige.
Josh’s paternal grandmother was named Lenora Forman (the daughter of John A. Forman, and of a woman surnamed Shulman). Lenora was born in Pennsylvania, to a Jewish family. John was the son of Shimon Forman. Lenora’s maternal grandparents were Elia/Benjamin Shulman and Minnie, who was born in Russia.
Josh’s maternal grandfather was Morton Shore (the son of Isidore Shore and Rose Brod). Morton was born in Illinois, to Russian Jewish parents.
Josh’s maternal grandmother was the daughter of Samuel Jacob Glick/Basherglick and Ruth Wasserman, who were Jewish emigrants. Samuel was born in Kamenets, Kromskoy rayon, Orlovskaya oblast’, the son of Itzick Basherglick and Ghitel. Ruth was born in Russia, the daughter of Meshulam Wasserman and Chaya.
