Juanes is the son of Alicia Vásquez Restrepo and Javier Aristizábal Sánchez. He was raised in Medellín. Juanes is married to model and actress Karen Martinez , with whom he has three children.
Juanes’ patrilineal line can be traced to Joaquín Francisco Aristizabal Arbelaiz, who was born, c. 1730 in Hernani, Gipuzkoa, Basque Country, Spain, the son of Sebastián Aristizabal y Elgorriaga. Joaquín emigrated to Antioquia, Colombia, in 1747.
Juanes’ paternal grandfather was Abel Aristizábal Pérez (the son of Lorenzo Aristizábal Roldán and María Francisca Pérez Eceheverri). Lorenzo was the son of Vicente Aristizábal Mesa and Dolores Roldán Echeverri. María Francisca was the daughter of Miguel Pérez Palacio and Juana María Echeverri Uribe.
Juanes’ paternal grandmother was Matilde Sánchez Restrepo (the daughter of Rafael Sánchez Hurtado and Lucrecia Restrepo Álvarez). Rafael was the son of Rafael Sánchez and Emiliana Hurtado. Lucrecia was the daughter of Teodomiro Restrepo Pérez and Bárbara Álvarez Estrada.
Juanes’ maternal grandfather was Emilio Arturo Vásquez Marín (the son of Esteban Vásquez Arteaga and María Ventura Marín Montoya). Esteban was the son of Tomás Vásquez and Pastora Arteaga. María Ventura was the daughter of Marcelo Marín and Juanita Montoya.
Juanes’ maternal grandmother was Elvira Restrepo Cambas (the daughter of Juan Manuel Restrepo Álvarez and Laura Cambas Vásquez). Juan Manuel and Lucrecia Restrepo Álvarez were siblings, making Juanes’ parents second cousins. Juan Manuel was the son of Teodomiro Restrepo Perez and Barbara Alvarez Estrada.
