She was previously billed as Carlos Gascón. She is a transgender woman, and the first transgender woman to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress.
Her parents are from Andalusia. She is married to Marisa Gutiérrez, with whom she has a daughter. Karla Sofía has lived in Mexico for many years. She is a Nichiren Buddhist.
